Glaucoma Shunt / Tube Surgery in Mumbai – Kurla BKC, Kalina & Bandra W
When trabeculectomy has failed or is unlikely to succeed due to scarring, a glaucoma drainage device (shunt or tube) provides an alternative pathway for fluid to exit the eye. It is a highly effective option for complex glaucoma cases that have resisted other treatments.

What Is Glaucoma Shunt / Tube Surgery?
A small silicone tube is inserted into the eye and connected to a plate fixed to the outer wall of the eye. Fluid drains through the tube to the plate, where it is absorbed. Devices such as the Ahmed Glaucoma Valve include a pressure-sensitive valve to prevent over-drainage.
Who Is It For?
This procedure is generally suited to patients meeting the following criteria:
- Failed previous trabeculectomy
- Neovascular, uveitic, or traumatic glaucoma
- Eyes with excessive scarring making filtration surgery difficult
- Certain paediatric glaucoma cases
What Happens During the Procedure?
Each step is performed with precision and patient comfort in mind.
- Step 1: General or peribulbar anaesthesia
- Step 2: Plate sewn to the outer surface of the eye behind the lid
- Step 3: Tube inserted into the anterior chamber through a small incision
- Step 4: Tube covered with donor tissue or a patch graft for protection
Recovery & What to Expect
A temporary pressure rise may occur in the first 4–6 weeks while the drainage capsule matures. Pressure-lowering drops may be needed during this period. Full pressure control is usually achieved by 6–8 weeks post-operatively.
Benefits
Patients choosing this procedure typically experience the following benefits:
- Effective for complex glaucoma where trabeculectomy is not suitable
- The valve mechanism prevents dangerous pressure drops
- Long-lasting device — no need for frequent replacement
