Why do my eyes water if I have dry eye?

Paradoxical tearing is a hallmark of dry eye. When the basal tear film is inadequate, the eye sends a distress signal that triggers reflex tearing — but this compensatory water lacks the oils and proteins of a healthy tear.

Can dry eye be cured?

For most patients it is a chronic condition that can be very well controlled. A minority of cases (e.g. post-LASIK, mild evaporative dry eye) do resolve completely with appropriate treatment.

Is screen reduction the only solution?

Reducing screen time helps, but it is rarely the complete answer. Addressing meibomian gland function, blinking habits, environment, and sometimes using prescription anti-inflammatory drops produces far better results than lifestyle changes alone.
