Paediatric Ophthalmology
01

What Is Paediatric Ophthalmology?

Paediatric ophthalmology covers the diagnosis and management of eye conditions specific to infants, children, and adolescents. The visual system develops most rapidly in the first 7–8 years of life — which means any uncorrected vision problem during this period can lead to permanent amblyopia (lazy eye) if not addressed in time.

02

Who Is It For?

This procedure is generally suited to patients meeting the following criteria:

  • Infants with suspected squint (crossing or wandering eye) from any age
  • Children who sit very close to the TV, squint at the board, or complain of headaches
  • School-age children failing vision screening or performing poorly in class
  • Any child with a family history of significant refractive error, squint, or amblyopia
  • Routine first eye check recommended at age 3–4
03

What Happens During the Procedure?

Each step is performed with precision and patient comfort in mind.

  • Step 1: Age-appropriate visual acuity assessment (picture charts, preferential looking for infants)
  • Step 2: Cycloplegic refraction (drops to relax the focusing muscle) for accurate prescription
  • Step 3: Cover test and ocular motility assessment for squint
  • Step 4: Anterior and posterior segment examination
  • Step 5: Treatment prescription: glasses, patching therapy, or referral for surgical squint correction
04

Recovery & What to Expect

Glasses are prescribed immediately when needed. Patching for amblyopia typically continues for weeks to months with regular monitoring of progress. Squint surgery recovery takes 1–2 weeks.

05

FAQFrequently Asked Questions

Ideally by age 3–4, or earlier if you notice any squint, unusual eye movement, or if there is a family history of glasses or lazy eye. Newborns with a family history of serious eye conditions should be checked within the first few months.

Many children's prescriptions change significantly as they grow. Some children outgrow their refractive error; others will need glasses long-term. Dr. Mickey monitors prescription changes at every visit.

We use picture-based charts, matching tests, and for very young infants, preferential looking techniques that require no verbal response from the child. The examination is adapted entirely to the child's age and ability.
