Glued IOL (Sutureless Lens Fixation) in Mumbai – Kurla BKC, Kalina & Bandra W

Glued IOL is a specialised surgical technique for implanting an intraocular lens when the eye's natural lens capsule — which normally holds the IOL in place — is absent or compromised. This situation arises after complicated cataract surgery, trauma, or in eyes with congenital lens abnormalities. It restores functional vision in eyes that would otherwise be severely disadvantaged.

01

What Is Glued IOL (Sutureless Lens Fixation)?

Two tiny flaps are created in the conjunctiva and sclera. Haptics (the supporting arms of the IOL) are passed through the flaps and tucked into scleral pockets. Tissue adhesive (fibrin glue) seals the flaps, fixing the IOL permanently in the correct position without sutures that can break or erode over time.

02

Who Is It For?

This procedure is generally suited to patients meeting the following criteria:

  • Eyes without capsular support after complicated cataract surgery
  • Traumatic lens dislocation with inadequate capsule
  • Dislocated or subluxated IOL requiring repositioning
  • Congenital absence of the zonules (Marfan syndrome, ectopia lentis)
03

What Happens During the Procedure?

Each step is performed with precision and patient comfort in mind.

  • Step 1: Two partial-thickness scleral flaps created 180° apart
  • Step 2: Vitrectomy performed to clear the vitreous cavity
  • Step 3: IOL introduced, haptics externalised through the scleral flaps
  • Step 4: Haptics tucked into scleral pockets; flaps sealed with fibrin glue
  • Step 5: Conjunctiva closed; antibiotic drops commenced
04

Recovery & What to Expect

Vision typically improves significantly within the first few weeks. The eye may be red and tender for 2–4 weeks. Activity restrictions for 4 weeks — no heavy lifting or rubbing the eye.

05

Benefits

Patients choosing this procedure typically experience the following benefits:

  • Avoids the use of sutures that can erode or break years later
  • Stable, long-lasting IOL fixation
  • Restores functional vision in complex eyes without capsular support
  • Can correct IOL dislocation in existing patients
FAQFrequently Asked Questions

Yes — it has an established and growing evidence base. In experienced hands it delivers stable, long-term results with low complication rates.

Fibrin glue is a scaffold — by the time it absorbs (weeks), the scleral tissue has already adhered to the haptic through natural healing. The IOL remains stable.
