Children's Eye Health: Signs Your Child May Need Glasses

Children often don't know that their vision isn't normal — they simply assume everyone sees the world the way they do. That's why it's up to parents, teachers, and healthcare providers to watch for the signs. Undetected vision problems can significantly affect a child's learning, confidence, and development.

Why Children's Vision Exams Matter

Approximately 80% of learning in a child's early years is visual. Poor vision can be misinterpreted as behavioural problems, learning disabilities, or attention issues. A child who struggles to see the board clearly isn't being difficult — they may simply need glasses.

The critical visual development period runs from birth to around 8 years of age. Conditions caught during this window, like amblyopia (lazy eye) or strabismus (crossed eyes), respond much better to treatment than those detected later.

Common Signs to Watch For

  • Squinting or closing one eye to see clearly
  • Sitting very close to the TV or holding books unusually close to the face
  • Frequent headaches or eye rubbing, especially after reading
  • Tilting the head or covering one eye
  • Complaints that things are blurry or that they can't see the whiteboard at school
  • Avoiding reading, drawing, or other close-up activities
  • Poor hand-eye coordination or difficulty catching a ball

What to Expect at a Children's Eye Exam

Children's eye exams are adapted to be age-appropriate and fun. We don't rely on your child being able to read a chart — we use specialised techniques and charts to assess vision even in very young children or those who can't yet read letters.

We check visual acuity, eye alignment, eye movement and coordination, focusing ability, and the health of all eye structures.

When Should Children Start Having Eye Exams?

We recommend a first eye exam at around 6 months, another at age 3, and then again before starting school. After that, exams every one to two years are appropriate unless a problem has been identified, in which case more frequent visits may be needed.
