UV Protection and Sunglasses: What Your Eyes Need Year-Round

Stylish sunglasses with UV400 protection

Most people know that UV radiation can damage skin — but fewer realise it's equally damaging to your eyes. Chronic UV exposure is a major risk factor for cataracts, macular degeneration, and even certain eye cancers. The right sunglasses offer genuine medical protection, not just a fashion statement.

How UV Damages Your Eyes

UV radiation is divided into UVA and UVB wavelengths. Both types penetrate the eye and damage its tissues over time. UVB is primarily absorbed by the cornea and lens, where it contributes to cataracts and photokeratitis (essentially sunburn of the eye). UVA penetrates deeper, reaching the retina and contributing to macular degeneration.

Unlike sunburn on skin, which you feel immediately, UV damage to the eyes accumulates silently over decades — making prevention especially important.

What to Look for in Sunglasses

Not all sunglasses offer meaningful UV protection. Here's what to check:

  • UV400 or '100% UV protection' label: This means the lenses block all UV light up to 400 nanometres, covering both UVA and UVB.
  • Polarised lenses: These reduce glare from reflective surfaces (water, roads, snow) and improve visual comfort — but polarisation alone does not indicate UV protection. Look for both features.
  • Lens darkness: Darker lenses don't necessarily mean better UV protection. Some clear lenses provide full UV400 coverage.
  • Wraparound or large-frame styles: These block UV entering from the sides — a commonly overlooked exposure pathway.

Do You Need Sunglasses in Winter?

Yes. UV radiation is present year-round, regardless of cloud cover or temperature. In fact, UV exposure can be particularly intense in winter when snow reflects up to 80% of UV radiation back toward your face. If you ski, snowboard, or spend time outdoors in winter, quality eye protection is essential.

Children Need UV Protection Too

Children's eyes are more vulnerable to UV damage than adults' because the lens is clearer and transmits more UV to the retina. Getting children into the habit of wearing UV-protective sunglasses and hats outdoors is one of the best long-term investments you can make in their eye health.
