Dry Eye Syndrome: Why Your Eyes Feel Gritty, Tired, and Uncomfortable

Person rubbing tired and dry eyes

Dry eye syndrome is one of the most common — and most underdiagnosed — eye conditions. Millions of people live with uncomfortable, irritated eyes without realising that effective treatment is available. If your eyes frequently feel gritty, burning, watery, or tired, you may have dry eye syndrome.

What Is Dry Eye Syndrome?

Dry eye syndrome occurs when your tears don't adequately lubricate the surface of your eyes. This can happen because you're not producing enough tears, or because the tears you produce evaporate too quickly due to poor quality.

A healthy tear film has three layers: an oily outer layer that prevents evaporation, a watery middle layer that cleans the eye, and a mucous inner layer that spreads tears evenly. Problems with any of these layers can cause dry eye.

Common Causes

  • Aging (tear production naturally decreases with age)
  • Prolonged screen use (we blink less, causing faster tear evaporation)
  • Certain medications, including antihistamines, antidepressants, and blood pressure drugs
  • Hormonal changes, particularly in women during menopause
  • Environmental factors: air conditioning, heating, wind, smoke
  • Contact lens wear, especially with lenses not suited to your eyes
  • Autoimmune conditions like Sjogren's syndrome

Recognising the Symptoms

Paradoxically, one of the most common symptoms of dry eye is watery eyes. When the eye surface is irritated, it triggers a reflex overproduction of tears — but these tears are often low quality and don't provide lasting lubrication. Other symptoms include a stinging or burning sensation, a feeling of grittiness or sand in the eye, blurry vision that fluctuates during the day, and eye fatigue.

Treatment Options

The right treatment depends on the cause and severity of your dry eye. Options include artificial tear drops (for mild cases), prescription eye drops that reduce inflammation, omega-3 fatty acid supplements, punctal plugs (tiny devices that block the tear drainage canals to keep tears on the eye longer), and in-office treatments like meibomian gland expression for evaporative dry eye.
