Cryopexy (Retinal Freezing Treatment) in Mumbai – Kurla BKC, Kalina & Bandra W
Cryopexy uses a precise freezing probe applied to the outer surface of the eye to create a controlled scar that seals retinal tears and prevents them from progressing to a full detachment. It is quick, effective, and often performed in combination with other retinal procedures.

What Is Cryopexy (Retinal Freezing Treatment)?
A cryoprobe cooled to -60 to -80°C is applied to the sclera over the retinal tear. The freeze- thaw cycle creates an inflammatory response that forms adhesive scar tissue, firmly bonding the retina to the underlying tissue around the tear.
Who Is It For?
This procedure is generally suited to patients meeting the following criteria:
- Peripheral retinal tears with or without localised detachment
- Combined with scleral buckle or pneumatic retinopexy
- Areas where laser delivery is difficult (e.g. anterior tears)
What Happens During the Procedure?
Each step is performed with precision and patient comfort in mind.
- Step 1: Peribulbar or subconjunctival anaesthesia administered
- Step 2: Indirect ophthalmoscope used to locate the tear precisely
- Step 3: Cryoprobe applied externally over the tear — brief freeze-thaw cycle
- Step 4: Eye padded; antibiotic drops prescribed
Recovery & What to Expect
Redness and mild swelling around the eye for 1–2 weeks. The adhesion strengthens over 10– 14 days. Activity restrictions during this healing period.
Benefits
Patients choosing this procedure typically experience the following benefits:
- Can treat tears not accessible to laser
- Quick and effective — done in the clinic or at the start of retinal surgery
- Reliable long-term seal when the adhesion is fully formed
