Anti-VEGF Injection Therapy in Mumbai – Kurla BKC, Kalina & Bandra W

Anti-VEGF injections are the most important advance in retina medicine of the last two decades. By blocking the protein that drives abnormal blood vessel growth, they halt — and often reverse — the vision loss caused by conditions like wet AMD, diabetic macular oedema, and retinal vein occlusion.

01

What Is Anti-VEGF Injection Therapy?

Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) triggers leaky, fragile blood vessels to form in and beneath the retina. Anti-VEGF drugs (ranibizumab, bevacizumab, aflibercept, faricimab) are injected into the vitreous cavity (the gel inside the eye) using a very fine needle. They neutralise VEGF and allow the retina to dry out and stabilise.

02

Who Is It For?

This procedure is generally suited to patients meeting the following criteria:

  • Wet Age-Related Macular Degeneration (wet AMD)
  • Diabetic Macular Oedema (DMO)
  • Retinal vein occlusion with macular involvement
  • Myopic choroidal neovascularisation
03

What Happens During the Procedure?

Each step is performed with precision and patient comfort in mind.

  • Step 1: Eye cleaned and draped under sterile conditions
  • Step 2: Topical and/or subconjunctival anaesthesia applied
  • Step 3: Injection administered through the pars plana into the vitreous — takes under 30 seconds
  • Step 4: Eye pressure checked post-injection; antibiotic drops prescribed
04

Recovery & What to Expect

Mild redness, grittiness, or floaters for 24–48 hours after each injection are normal. Vision can be expected to improve over several sessions. Most conditions require monthly injections initially, tapering based on response as monitored by OCT scans.

05

Benefits

Patients choosing this procedure typically experience the following benefits:

  • Can preserve and often improve central vision
  • Avoids the need for surgery in most retinal vascular conditions
  • Monitored closely with OCT imaging at each visit
  • Modern drugs like faricimab extend the injection interval — fewer visits needed
FAQFrequently Asked Questions

Most patients are surprised by how comfortable the procedure is. The needle is very fine and the anaesthetic drops are highly effective. There may be a brief sensation of pressure.

This depends on the condition and your response. Wet AMD and DMO often require monthly injections for the first 3–4 months, then a treat-and-extend protocol. Dr. Mickey will personalise your schedule.

Serious complications such as infection (endophthalmitis) are rare (less than 1 in 1,000) but serious. A strict sterile technique at every injection reduces this risk significantly.
