Pneumatic Retinopexy in Mumbai – Kurla BKC, Kalina & Bandra W

Pneumatic Retinopexy is the least invasive surgical option for certain retinal detachments. A gas bubble is injected into the eye and the patient positions their head so the bubble floats up and presses the detached retina back into place — no operating theatre incisions required.

Pneumatic Retinopexy
01

What Is Pneumatic Retinopexy?

An expanding gas (usually SF6 or C3F8) is injected into the vitreous cavity. The patient maintains a specific head position for several days so the bubble covers the tear. Laser or cryopexy is used to seal the tear. As the gas absorbs, the retina remains attached.

02

Who Is It For?

This procedure is generally suited to patients meeting the following criteria:

  • Single retinal tear in the upper half of the retina
  • Fresh detachment without significant proliferative vitreoretinopathy
  • Suitable patients who can maintain required positioning
03

What Happens During the Procedure?

Each step is performed with precision and patient comfort in mind.

  • Step 1: Cryopexy applied to seal the tear at the clinic
  • Step 2: Expanding gas injected into the vitreous under sterile conditions
  • Step 3: Patient instructed on precise head positioning to maintain for 5–7 days
  • Step 4: Laser consolidation applied once retina reattaches
04

Recovery & What to Expect

Head positioning is demanding but temporary. Vision is poor while the gas bubble is present. As the bubble absorbs over 1–3 weeks, vision gradually improves. A strict air travel ban applies while gas is in the eye.

Benefits

Patients choosing this procedure typically experience the following benefits:

  • Office-based procedure — no theatre time required
  • Fastest recovery of any retinal detachment repair when successful
  • Preserves the option for vitrectomy if reattachment fails
FAQFrequently Asked Questions

Single-operation success rates are around 70–80% for carefully selected cases. In cases of failure, vitrectomy or scleral buckle can achieve successful reattachment.
